Student Achievement

The Office of Academic Planning and Accountability at the University of Louisville requires that all academic programs identify expected student learning outcomes, assesses the extent to which these outcomes are achieved, and provide evidence of improvement when necessary. The Master of Urban Planning program evaluates student achievement on three outcomes:

Students will demonstrate a command of the historical literature of urban planning, its current streams of inquiry, and the major theoretical issues that the discipline engages. After taking PLAN 601, the theory and history course, during their first semester, students will demonstrate theoretical preparation for future coursework and practice in the field of urban planning. PLAN601 is a required core course for all MUP students and should be completed in the first semester of study. Success of our graduate students in meeting Learning Outcome 1 is evaluated by performance in PLAN 601: Planning Theory & History, using the following criteria:

1. Oral presentation of planning journal articles
2. Research paper on planning theory and current development processes
3. Weekly reflection papers that reflect critical thinking about difficult theoretical concepts and participation in class discourse


75% of students must be assessed at a B+ or better. 100%
Students will understand the research methods of urban planning and allied professional fields and be able to use those methods for future scholarship or professional practice. Students are required to take the core course, PLAN604 Applied Research Methods. After taking PLAN604, a comprehensive research design and methods course during their first year, students will demonstrate a command of research design and research techniques sufficient to support their future course work and practice in the field of urban planning. PLAN604 is a required course for all MUP students and should be completed in the first year of study. Learning Outcome 2 is evaluated by performance in PLAN 604: Applied Research Methods project assignments the following methodologies and analytical approaches: population pyramid analysis, trend analysis, and shift-share analysis.

Students will demonstrate the acquisition of professional practice skills and successfully integrate their coursework into the applied setting. The professional internship or practicum requires students to integrate and test the skills and knowledge accumulated during the academic program of study by offering challenging professional work experience. Each student submits a paper that compares the theoretical foundation for their practice with their actual work experience. Learning Outcome 3 is evaluated by performance in PLAN 606: Internship & Professional Practice final paper assignment. 90% of students must be assessed as “Proficient” (B or better). 100%
