New Undergraduate Courses!

The Department of Urban and Public Affairs will offer undergraduate real estate courses for the first time in Spring 2023!

In Kentucky, to take the real-estate sales license exam, there is an education requirement of taking real estate courses. Taking the following two courses will help students meet the education requirement. Many other states have similar education requirements for taking a real-estate license exam.

PLAN 380: Real Estate Development and Finance (in-person)
This course is intended to give students an overview of real estate development and finance, with emphasis on applications to real estate development. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to (1) Identify and describe the processes of real estate development including land acquisition, development administration, and the management of completed projects. (2) Demonstrate an understanding of the perspectives of both public and private sectors in the process of real estate development. (3) Demonstrate an understanding of value analysis, appraisal, property development, special economics, real estate finance, and law and brokerage as they relate to real estate development.

URBS 380: Introduction to Real Estate Principles (online)
The course provides decision makers with a basic understanding of real estate principles that will help them to make informed business and development decisions relating to real estate development. A general introduction to the role of real estate in governance, and the particulars of the wide range of subjects associated with it as a business and necessary for its practice as a profession, are provided. Heightened attention will be paid to the importance of value in real estate decision making to include whether and how to lease, buy, or mortgage a property acquisition. Also of particular focus will be the professional ethical obligations and expectations of those whose professional employment is as a realtor, developer, or city manager.
